How to Sell a Car Without a Title in North Carolina

Losing a car title is more common than people think — it gets mixed in with old mail, left in a glovebox during a trade-in, or simply never transferred properly after a private sale. The good news: in North Carolina, you have options.

Can You Legally Sell a Car Without a Title in NC?

Technically, North Carolina law requires a title to transfer ownership of a vehicle. But "no title" situations vary a lot, and many of them are solvable.

Here are the most common scenarios:

You Lost the Title

This is the easiest fix. Go to your local NC DMV office and apply for a duplicate title. You'll need:

  • Your driver's license or state ID
  • The vehicle's VIN (found on the dashboard or door jamb)
  • Form MVR-4 (Application for Duplicate Title)
  • A $20 fee

In most cases, you'll have a duplicate title within 10–15 business days. Expedited processing is available for an additional fee.

You Bought the Car but Never Got the Title Transferred

This happens often with private sales. The previous owner signed the back of the title but you never registered it in your name. You may still be able to transfer using that signed title — but if the title is lost too, you'll need to track down the previous owner or apply for a bonded title.

You Have a Salvage or Rebuilt Title

This is a different situation — you have a title, it's just a salvage or rebuilt title. These are fully transferable in NC. The value is lower, but the car can be sold legally. Cash buyers will still make offers on salvage titles.

The Lien Was Never Released

If you paid off a loan but the lender never sent the title or filed a lien release, contact the lender directly. They're required to release the lien. If the lender is out of business, NC DMV has a process for this — contact them at (919) 814-1779.

The Bonded Title Option

If you genuinely cannot get a regular duplicate title, North Carolina allows you to apply for a bonded title (also called a Certificate of Title Surety). This involves:

  1. Getting a surety bond for 1.5x the vehicle's value
  2. Filing an application with NC DMV
  3. Waiting for approval (typically 30–60 days)

A bonded title functions like a regular title and allows you to sell the vehicle. The bond protects any third parties who might have a legitimate prior claim to the vehicle.

Selling to a Cash Buyer Without a Title

If you need to move fast and don't have time to go through the DMV process, some cash buyers — including us — can work with no-title situations depending on the circumstances.

We've been buying cars in Eastern NC for 23 years. We've seen almost every title situation there is. Call us at (252) 717-7255 and describe your situation — we'll tell you honestly what we can and can't do.

In general, we can often work with:

  • Vehicles with a signed-over title from a previous owner
  • Very old vehicles (pre-1981 in some cases)
  • Vehicles where you have other proof of ownership

What we can't do is buy a vehicle with zero documentation — that protects everyone involved.

What Not to Do

Don't try to sell a car "as-is" on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist without disclosing the title situation — it creates legal liability for you. And don't sign anything or accept money for a car before the title situation is resolved or clearly disclosed.

The DMV duplicate title process is straightforward and usually worth doing before selling. You'll get more money for the car and a cleaner transaction.
