NC Car Paperwork Helper

Updated October 2026 · 3 min · SellCarNC

Answer a few questions and get a checklist for your situation: selling, giving a car to family, handling a car after the owner died, or selling before a PCS. Then fill in a bill of sale and print it. It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to us.

How it works

  1. Answer a few questions about the car and what you are doing with it.
  2. Get a checklist with the NCDMV forms that apply and links to our guides. Print it or tick it off on screen.
  3. Make a bill of sale with the details filled in, then print it or save it as a PDF.

What it is based on

The checklist follows the same sources as our guides: the NCDMV forms (title application MVR-1, odometer MVR-180, damage disclosure MVR-181, power of attorney MVR-63, tax exemption MVR-613 and the affidavit MVR-317), and North Carolina statutes G.S. 20-72, 20-77 and 28A-25-1. It is general information. Your situation can have details it does not cover, so confirm with NCDMV or the Clerk of Superior Court.

Frequently asked questions

No. Everything you type stays in your browser. We do not receive it or store it, and it is gone when you close the page.
NCDMV does not list a bill of sale as required for a private sale, but a signed one records the price, date and condition. It is a good idea.
Yes. Choose Print, then choose Save as PDF as the destination in your print window.
If a lender holds the title, the loan has to be paid and the lien released before the title can be signed over, and some forms, like the power of attorney, work differently.
No. It is a free helper from SellCarNC. Always use the official NCDMV forms that apply to your transfer.
